Tronolone Productions is a team of highly skilled producers based in Maui's North Shore. We are well versed in all aspect of production and can do any kind of video job. We do happen to specialize in water-based productions and have an array of gear for capturing high impact images on, in and around the water but don't let that make you think that we can't do any other kind of productions. Just because we are good and holding cameras in twenty foot surf when most others would fail does not mean we can't be professional and hold a camera on land for a TV show, commercial, convention or and other type of Maui Video Production so please don't stereo type us as surfer dude video guys and see us as the experienced professionals that we are. It's true We have produced several surfing videos and we have produced over two dozen kite boarding movies. It is also true that our founder Chris Tronolone worked as second unit Director of Photography for the Motion Picture"Gone To Maui". We do a lot of work that does not take place in the water. Like for example producing the TV commercials for the Sony Ericson Phone in 2005. In 2009 we produced a pilot for a major TV network right here on Maui. We are still waiting to see if it gets picked up. Here is a brief history of our company and the formats that we have used and are presently using.
Tronolone Productions is a Maui Video Production Company, founded by Chris Tronolone in 1996. After working for Volcom on "Stoney Baloney" and all film for video release project for nearly a year. I was frustrated with the amount of time it took for film to get processed but loved look and frame size. The Sony VX-1000 came out in 1996 and I got one with a water housing right away and went to work. I also got a Mac G3 with a Radius Fire Wire card. So I was able to edit DV in its native form. Let me tell you it looked great. It looked way better then anything anyone else was doing at the time. As time wore on we got better DV cameras then HDV came out and I was reluctant to get on board with HDV but eventually I had to. I got a Sony Z1U and a Canon XLH1. I was pretty stoked until one day I realized it was not really 1920 by 1080 but 1440 by 1080 with stretched pixels to create that HD look. Something that had to be done with the HDV codec to get all that info onto a DV tape. I wanted more quality and 4:2:2 color sampling. Finally Panasonic released the HPX 200 I was hesitant because I had just upgraded to HDV but once all my Maui Video Production Clients started asking for P2 cameras I knew it was time. I did a bunch of researched and for by budget and situation I decided to purchase the Panasonic HPX 300 and the Panasonic HPX 170. This way I would have a full size camera I could put bigger lenses on and also would have a smaller camera for water housings, steady trackers or other custom rigs. I have to admit I am very happy with my purchase. The Panasonic cameras look great and the DVC PRO HD format is very nice. The HPX 300 also shoots in the AVC INTRA 100 format which actually has better color reproduction than DVC PRO HD but takes up less room on the P2 cards. So finally I am shooting in full size uncompressed Hi Definition. It only took sixteen years from when I bought my first Arriflex film camera. Now I can have better than film quality and I don't have to wait at all or buy film or pay a lab to process it. Thanks Panasonic you have made me and my clients very happy.
